To cancel a Nevada vehicle registration after you move, use the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) online service in MyDMV, or mail the plates to the DMV in Carson City with a signed cancellation letter and form DMV 22. The online option is only for owners who have not yet obtained a driver's license in their new state. Either way, keep the Nevada insurance until the cancellation is done, because Nevada allows no grace period on a registered car.
This guide is for owners whose car is leaving Nevada with them. It covers when to cancel, the order that avoids an insurance suspension, each cancellation method, what to do when your new state keeps the Nevada plates, what happens to unused registration fees and how to confirm the cancellation went through. Two things trip movers up: dropping the Nevada policy before the registration is canceled, and taking a new state's driver's license before canceling online. If the car is heading to New York, our page on Nevada to New York car shipping covers the lane itself.
Do You Have to Cancel a Nevada Registration When You Move?
You have to tell the DMV you moved, and canceling is how you close the registration before its insurance ends. The DMV's Former Nevada Residents page says Nevada law requires you to notify the DMV within 30 days of moving, even when the move is out of state. Nevada requires liability insurance on every registered vehicle, with no grace period, and the DMV's Liability Insurance Requirements page says to cancel the registration before dropping that insurance for any reason.
A registration left open keeps the car in Nevada's insurance checks after you leave. The section on dropping insurance below explains what that brings.
When Should You Cancel Your Nevada Registration?
After the car is insured and registered in your new state, not before it leaves Nevada. A shipped car travels on its Nevada plates and registration, so both need to stay current and insured until the new state's registration is done. Canceling first would leave the car without a valid registration on the way.
That gives movers a simple order:
- Insure and register the car in your new state. If it is going to New York, our guide to registering an out-of-state car in New York walks through that side.
- Cancel the Nevada registration. Online or by mail, and keep the proof.
- End the Nevada policy. Only once the cancellation is confirmed.

One timing detail decides which method you can use. The Former Nevada Residents page offers the MyDMV address change and registration cancellation only to people who have not obtained a driver's license in their new state. If you take the new license at the same visit as the registration, or earlier, plan on canceling by mail.
How Do You Cancel a Nevada Registration Online?
Use MyDMV, the DMV's online account, as long as you do not yet hold a driver's license from your new state. The DMV's Registration Cancellation page says any registration fee credit is listed on the receipt, so save it.
Canceling online does not take care of the plates. They either go on another vehicle or are surrendered to the DMV, by mail or at a DMV office, and once the car has left Nevada, mail is the practical choice; the next section gives the DMV's mailing address for plates. The page also notes two limits: after an online cancellation, you cannot get a movement permit or transfer the plates online, and the online service is not for a vehicle traded in to a Nevada dealer.
How Do You Cancel by Mail or in Person?
By mail. Mail works whenever you are ready, and it is the route once you hold a driver's license from your new state. Send these to the DMV:
- The plates and the registration decal.
- A signed letter asking the DMV to cancel the registration. Include your return address and a daytime phone number.
- Form DMV 22, the Change of Address Notification. It records your new address and is signed under penalty of perjury.
Mail everything to Department of Motor Vehicles, Central Services Division, 555 Wright Way, Carson City, NV 89711-0700. The DMV recommends certified mail with a return signature, which also gives you proof of when the package arrived. DMV 22 is a change of address form, so the signed letter is what asks for the cancellation. If you only need to report the new address, the Former Nevada Residents page also lets you fax DMV 22 to (775) 684-4829.
In person. Any DMV office can cancel a registration, and in rural areas a County Assessor's office can too. No appointment is needed. Bring the rear plate so staff can remove the decal, and hand plates you are surrendering to the information desk; do not leave them in a drop box unless it is marked for plates. An office visit only works while you are still in Nevada, so after you have moved, use MyDMV or mail.
What If Your New State Kept Your Nevada Plates?
Then you cannot mail them back, and the DMV asks for two forms instead: DMV 22 and form VP 202, the Lost, Stolen, Mutilated or Surrendered License Plate Affidavit. On VP 202, check the Confiscated/Surrendered box, give the reason, and say where the plates were turned in: the state, the DMV location and the authority that took them. Note those details when you hand the plates over.
The affidavit is signed before a notary public or an authorized Nevada DMV representative, and the Former Nevada Residents page calls for it notarized when the new state kept the plates. Send DMV 22 and VP 202 by fax to (775) 684-4829 or by mail to the Carson City address above.
What Happens If You Drop Your Nevada Insurance First?
Nevada has no grace period, and the DMV's Liability Insurance Requirements page sets out what follows when a registered car goes uninsured. The DMV sends an insurance verification request, which must be answered within 15 days. A certified letter can follow, and it suspends the registration 10 days after it is mailed.
The fees for a first lapse depend on how long the car was uninsured:
- 1 to 30 days: $250.
- 31 to 90 days: $500.
- 91 to 180 days: $750, plus an SR-22 filing for three years.
- 181 days or more: $1,250, plus an SR-22 filing for three years.
Second and third lapses within five years cost more, up to $1,750, and a third lapse within five years adds a driver's license suspension of at least 30 days.
If you have already moved. The same page says someone who moved out of state is not required to pay these fees but must notify the DMV to stop the suspension process. The Former Nevada Residents page explains how: answer a notice online through the DMV's Insurance Verification Response service, or return the written notice saying you have moved out of state. Ignoring the notices brings no fine, arrest warrant or legal action, but several can arrive, and a suspended Nevada registration can bring reinstatement fees if you return to Nevada with the same vehicle. Canceling the registration before ending the policy is the cleaner way to stay out of this process.
Do You Get Any Money Back When You Cancel?
Usually as a credit rather than a refund. Canceling credits the unused portion of the current registration fees, and the Registration Cancellation page sets the rules. The credit can go toward the registration or renewal of another vehicle registered in your name, using it costs $6, and it expires on the original expiration date of the canceled registration. It covers the registration fee, the Governmental Services Tax and the Supplemental Governmental Services Tax, not plate fees or sales tax, and it cannot be transferred to another person. For a mover, it only has value if you register another vehicle in Nevada before that date.
Refunds are narrower. Former residents are not eligible for a refund of unused registration fees, and the limited refund cases the Former Nevada Residents page describes, such as a duplicate fee paid in error, do not include moving out of state.
Nevada residents can qualify for a full or partial refund under NRS 482.399(9). The registration has to be canceled with form VP 210, the plates surrendered, and no sanctions, parking violations or bad debts tied to the registration. One of these must also apply:
- License relinquished and vehicle sold. The owner's driver's license was relinquished and the vehicle sold or disposed of, with the buyer's name and sale date on VP 210.
- Inoperable vehicle. The vehicle is inoperable and cannot be transferred, shown by a salvage title or an insurer's total-loss letter.
- Serious illness or death. The owner is seriously ill or has died, shown by a doctor's note, hospital bill or death certificate.
Form VP 210 adds that the request must be made when the registration is canceled, that the refund must come to more than $100, and that missing documents mean a denial. A refund covers unused registration fees and both Governmental Services Taxes, not specialty plate fees, sales tax, late fees or other DMV charges. Offices do not issue refunds; if the request is approved, the check arrives within 6 to 8 weeks of the DMV receiving the plates.
How Do You Know the Cancellation Went Through?
Keep proof whichever route you use. An online cancellation produces a receipt, which also lists any fee credit. A cancellation sent by certified mail with a return signature shows when the DMV received the plates. To check the result, the DMV's Registration and Insurance Status Inquiry shows whether a registration is still active; it asks for the plate number and the last four digits of the vehicle identification number (VIN). Run it before you end the Nevada policy.
How Does Shipping Fit Around the Cancellation?
A car shipped out of Nevada travels on its Nevada plates and registration, so keep both, and the insurance behind them, current until the new state's registration is done. Keep the title, the registration certificate and your insurance papers with you during transport rather than in the car.
Rivalane coordinates door to door transport from Nevada with licensed, insured carriers, including the lane to New York. Pickup and delivery dates are estimates, not guarantees, so wait for the new registration before you cancel the Nevada one. Our pages on shipping a car from Nevada to New York and car shipping in Nevada cover the lane and pickups across the state, and the car shipping calculator gives an estimate for the move.
