City pairs on this lane run about 480 to 970 road miles, and delivery typically follows 2 to 4 days after loading. Moving a sedan by open carrier, New York City to Charlotte, usually runs $650 to $1,050. Book a week or two ahead, and get a North Carolina license before titling.

How Car Shipping From New York to North Carolina Works

A car picked up anywhere from Brooklyn and Queens out to Long Island or up in Westchester rides a southbound hauler across New Jersey and Delaware, around Baltimore and Washington, and down I-95 through Virginia, where a Charlotte car passes the halfway mark near Ashland, just north of Richmond. At Petersburg the trucks headed for the Piedmont bear onto I-85, which carries them past Henderson to Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and finally Charlotte. Fayetteville and Wilmington stay on I-95 into eastern North Carolina instead. Asheville is the outlier: the calculator we measured with sends it inland through Harrisburg and the Shenandoah Valley on I-81, past Roanoke and Wytheville. Upstate pickups take their own lines south, with Albany cars for Charlotte, the Triad or Asheville joining I-81 in Pennsylvania, Albany runs to the Triangle and the coast using I-95, and most Buffalo cars heading south through Pittsburgh and West Virginia. What varies most is how soon a southbound truck with an open slot reaches your street.

How Much Does Car Shipping New York to North Carolina Cost?

The city pairs we measured run from about 485 road miles, New York City to Durham, up to roughly 970, Plattsburgh to Asheville. On a run of this length the miles decide most of the quote, and the two addresses nudge it up or down.

On the New York end, suburban driveways on Long Island and Staten Island or in Westchester let a full size hauler load quickly, while Manhattan and the denser blocks of Brooklyn usually mean meeting the driver on a wider street. Albany, Rochester and Syracuse start about 100 to 140 miles farther from Charlotte than the city does, Buffalo only about 30, and Plattsburgh about 300.

In North Carolina, Durham, Raleigh and Greensboro are the nearest deliveries from the city and usually price lowest. Charlotte lies near the end of that run, Wilmington sits on the coast past I-95, and Asheville in the mountains is the longest of the deliveries we measured.

If one offer undercuts the others by a wide margin, check that a carrier has committed to it, because loads posted too cheaply can wait days for a taker. Our shipping calculator returns a working figure for your exact addresses.

North Carolina map with Durham, Greensboro, Charlotte and Asheville pins and price tags that grow with distance from New York

An ordinary sedan going from New York City to Charlotte on an open carrier generally runs $650 to $1,050. Pickups in the city or on Long Island headed for Durham or Raleigh usually come in below the middle, and Albany or upstate cars bound for Asheville or Wilmington tend to land near the top.

A fully covered trailer costs roughly 40 to 60 percent more. Owners of collector cars, recent restorations and very low builds tend to find that worthwhile, and most commuter cars ride open.

Three things move a southbound North Carolina quote:

  • The New York address. Suburban curbs load fastest, Manhattan usually needs a meeting point, and a Plattsburgh pickup is priced on its own mileage and can run past the range.
  • The North Carolina town. Durham, Raleigh and Greensboro are the closest stops. Charlotte, the coast and the mountains add distance, with Asheville adding the most.
  • The vehicle. A big SUV or a full size pickup usually adds about $100 to $200. Mention a car that will not start when you book, because the driver has to winch it aboard.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?

Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady, and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Many customers on this route relocate permanently or move seasonally, which makes predictability more important than speed.

This article explains how auto transport Alabama to New York works, what it costs, and how long it takes, so you can make a clear, informed decision before you schedule your shipment.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and typically add a few hundred dollars on the same lane.

Is It Cheaper to Drive or Ship a Car From New York to North Carolina?

Shipping Instead of Driving

Shipping fits best when the car has to be in North Carolina but nobody can lose a long day or two on I-95 getting it there. A new job starting in Charlotte or the Research Triangle, a student car for a campus in Durham or Raleigh, and a used car bought from a seller in Queens are the usual reasons.

There is also no trip home to arrange. Whoever drove the car south would still need a flight or train back to New York, and that return adds a fare and another day.

Driving the Route Yourself

For a family relocating together, the drive usually costs less. By our calculator, New York City to Charlotte takes about ten and a half hours of driving, a very long day or two easier ones once you add turnpike and bridge tolls, fuel and a hotel.

The math changes when the car travels alone. A Raleigh drop off from the city is roughly 490 to 510 miles each way, so a driver who is not staying faces about a thousand miles in total.

How Long Does Shipping a Car From New York to North Carolina Take?

Once it is on the truck, a New York car typically reaches North Carolina in 2 to 4 days. City pickups bound for Durham or Raleigh can finish at the short end, while Plattsburgh pickups usually need the full four.

Most of the wait comes before loading, not on the highway. Dispatch slots each car into a southbound run already on the schedule, and a match normally comes through inside one to three working days.

Haulers seldom cover more than 400 to 500 miles before stopping for the night, so the 626 or so miles to Charlotte mean about two days at the wheel, plus time for the other cars aboard. Giving dispatch a few flexible pickup days shortens the total wait more than anything else.

When is the Best Time to Book Auto Transport From New York to North Carolina?

Southbound trucks leave the New York area for North Carolina all year, and our search data for this lane shows no clear peak month.

Reserving a week or two out covers most moves. A short range of acceptable pickup dates lets dispatch hand the car to the first carrier with room heading south.

In winter, allow a little extra slack for mountain deliveries. Snow on the high ground along I-81 or around Asheville can delay a pickup or a drop off, so a looser window helps most between December and March.

Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport on a New York to North Carolina Route

Most cars leaving New York for North Carolina go by open transport, on the double deck carriers you see on I-95 every day. Rain, dust and road film reach the car much as they would if it drove itself south.

Enclosed transport shuts the car inside a covered box for the entire run. Each of those trucks holds fewer cars, so a spot is pricier and sometimes slower to book.

Show cars, classics, exotics and anything with a very low front lip are the usual reasons to choose a covered trailer. Daily drivers, student cars and most household moves go open.

Enclosed Car Transport

Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.

Open Car Transport

Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.

Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.

What North Carolina Requires When Your Car Arrives

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, NCDMV, handles the switch in a set order: the driver license comes first, and only then can the car be titled and registered at a local license plate agency.

  • License first. NCDMV will not title or register the car until you hold a North Carolina driver license or ID. The driver license office also asks for printed or digital proof of liability insurance from a company licensed in North Carolina.
  • Timing. NCDMV allows 60 days from establishing a permanent residence for the license, title and registration, but registration can fall due sooner: once you take a job in North Carolina, or when the grace period agreed between North Carolina and your former state runs out, which NCDMV says is usually 30 days, whichever comes first.
  • What to bring. The New York title, or a registration card if a lender holds the title, the MVR-1 Title Application, the MVR-180 Odometer Disclosure for a car under 10 years old, and your North Carolina license or a valid out-of-state license with a North Carolina Temporary Driving Certificate.
  • Insurance. North Carolina wants liability coverage with no gaps, written by an insurer licensed in North Carolina, and policies from other states do not count. A policy issued or renewed after July 1, 2025 needs at least $50,000 for one injured person, $100,000 for an accident injuring two or more people, and $50,000 in property damage, plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.
  • Inspection. Plan on a North Carolina vehicle inspection by your first registration renewal at the latest.
  • Closing out New York. Turn in the New York plates and registration before you end the New York liability policy, because a switch to out-of-state coverage first counts as a lapse. The DMV takes plates by mail, dated by the postmark, or at an office, and a mailed return typically brings the FS-6T receipt in about three weeks.

What to Expect at Pickup and Delivery

Pick both handover spots ahead of time. A car hauler is long, and the driver needs room to pull over and turn.

Across New York City, especially in Manhattan, drivers tend to load at an agreed spot, often a quiet side avenue or a mall lot with open space. Houses on Long Island and in Westchester are frequently reachable right at the curb, and upstate pickups rarely run into access trouble.

In North Carolina, most suburban streets around Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham and Greensboro have space for the truck close to the driveway. Steep mountain roads near Asheville and narrow streets in older beach towns around Wilmington can shift the handover to a nearby paved lot.

Before loading, the driver writes every existing chip, dent and scratch onto the condition report, the bill of lading. When the car comes off the truck, check it against that list before signing, and keep date stamped photos of your own from both handovers.
