Booked on an open carrier, an operable sedan heading from Boston to Seattle typically costs $1,350 to $1,900. Road distance runs about 2,645 to 3,198 miles by town pair, mostly on I-94 and I-90, and the car usually reaches Washington 7 to 9 days after pickup. Giving two to three weeks of notice widens the choice of trucks.
How Does a Car Travel From Massachusetts to Washington State?
Massachusetts to Washington car shipping runs about 2,645 to 3,198 road miles, measured over 64 combinations of Massachusetts pickups and Washington deliveries, and the first day decides which road a truck uses to leave New England. Cars from Boston, Worcester, Lowell, Brockton, New Bedford and Hyannis head west through Hartford on I-84, then cross Pennsylvania past Scranton and Ohio past Youngstown on I-80, while Springfield and Pittsfield pickups take I-90 across New York by Albany, Syracuse and Buffalo and follow the lakeshore past Erie and Cleveland. By South Bend, Indiana, both groups are on the same road. From the Chicago area most loads ride I-94 through Madison, St. Paul, Fargo and Bismarck, join I-90 at Billings and cross Montana by Bozeman, Butte and Missoula before the Idaho panhandle. Spokane comes up first in Washington, Kennewick cars turn south at Ritzville, while cars bound for Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle, Everett and Bellingham keep going west by Moses Lake and Ellensburg. Vancouver is the exception: those cars leave the Chicago area on I-80 through Omaha and Cheyenne and pick up I-84 for the run past Boise and Pendleton.

How Much Does Massachusetts to Washington Car Shipping Cost?
Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.
The Washington end sets most of the mileage. From Boston, Spokane is the shortest delivery at about 2,780 road miles, Kennewick is next at roughly 2,920, Seattle, Tacoma and Everett fall between about 3,060 and 3,085, Olympia and Vancouver come in near 3,105 and Bellingham runs about 3,145. For other delivery towns, see the Washington car shipping page.
Where the car is picked up matters as well. Measured to Seattle, Pittsfield sits about 140 miles closer than Boston and Springfield about 90 closer, Worcester saves about 40, Lowell, Brockton and New Bedford land within about 15 miles of the Boston figure, and Hyannis adds roughly 50. Our Massachusetts car shipping page lists more pickup towns.
Beyond the miles, the size of the vehicle and the month of the move account for most of what is left. A large SUV or pickup uses more deck space, and winter weather across the northern states can add days.

Quotes for a running sedan placed on an open trailer for the Boston to Seattle trip usually fall between $1,350 and $1,900. To price your own pair of towns, run them through the car shipping calculator.
Expect roughly $100 to $200 extra when the vehicle is a full-size SUV, minivan or pickup that takes extra deck room, and switching to enclosed transport raises an open quote by 40 to 60 percent.
Three things decide where a quote lands inside that range:
- Delivery town. Spokane and Kennewick are the shortest runs from Massachusetts, and Bellingham is the longest.
- Pickup town. Pittsfield and Springfield start with fewer miles to cover, while Hyannis adds a little distance.
- Season. Snow on I-94 in North Dakota and on the Montana stretch of I-90 may hold up a winter load for a day or longer.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?
Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.
Should You Ship or Drive From Massachusetts to Washington State?
Reasons to Ship
Shipping fits a start date in Washington that leaves no time for the drive, a household moving two cars with only one free driver, and anyone who would rather not cross North Dakota and Montana in January.
It also keeps roughly 3,060 miles off the odometer and spares a week of fuel, meals and motel nights.
Reasons to Drive
With two drivers to share the wheel and no date the car must be there by, driving can cost less, and it is fair to say so. Our routing puts Boston to Seattle at about 55 hours behind the wheel, which usually turns into about a week once fuel, meals and sleep are counted.
Driving alone is a bigger ask, since even our shortest pair, Pittsfield to Spokane, covers about 2,645 miles. The cross-country car shipping cost guide weighs the two side by side.
How Long Does Massachusetts to Washington Car Shipping Take?
After loading, most cars reach a Washington State address in 7 to 9 days. Pittsfield to Spokane, about 2,645 miles and the shortest pair we measured, tends to land early in that window, and Hyannis to Bellingham, the longest at about 3,200, can take all of it.
Before anything moves, the order needs a carrier, and finding one generally needs one to three working days. Offering a few possible pickup dates gives dispatch more westbound trucks to choose from.
The Boston to Seattle drive works out to about 55 hours of road time in our routing, and the halfway point falls near Alexandria in western Minnesota. Winter storms across the northern Plains, or snow where I-90 climbs through western Montana and northern Idaho, may add a day or two.
When Should You Book a Massachusetts to Washington Shipment?
A lead time of two to three weeks suits this lane. It gives Rivalane room to place the car with a licensed carrier that is already scheduled toward Washington State and has an open spot, rather than taking whichever truck is free that day.
Add a little extra lead time in winter, when snow on the northern interstates can keep a hauler waiting for the road to clear.
Picking up in New York City instead? Our New York to Washington car shipping page covers it, and New Jersey to Washington car shipping handles pickups across the Hudson. When the car is headed south for the winter instead, Massachusetts to Florida car shipping covers that trip.
Open or Enclosed Transport From Massachusetts to Washington State?
The usual choice for this trip is open transport on a standard two-level trailer. Across roughly 3,060 miles from Boston to Seattle the car is exposed to whatever the season brings, from road salt in the Midwest to wind on the Plains and rain at the Puget Sound end, much as if it were driven.
An enclosed transport booking puts the car in a trailer with solid sides and a roof, out of the weather and road grit from Boston to Seattle. Each enclosed spot costs more because the trailer holds fewer cars, and short-notice requests are harder to fill.
Owners usually pick enclosed for collector cars, high-end sports cars and fresh paint, and send everyday cars open.
Enclosed Car Transport
Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.
Open Car Transport
Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.
Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.
Where to Go for Washington Plates After Leaving Massachusetts
Washington State handles licenses, titles and plates through the Department of Licensing, or DOL. New residents get 30 days after arriving to take care of the driver license and the registration. The paperwork falls into three visits, two in person and one online.
Visit one: a DOL driver licensing office. Start with the license, because the car cannot be registered until you have it. The DOL keeps driver licensing and vehicle licensing in different offices.
Visit two: a vehicle licensing office. Bring the current Massachusetts title and write down the odometer reading before you go in. If a lender holds the title, phone the vehicle licensing office and ask for its fax number, then have the lender send a copy of the title to that number. Applying in person gets you plates right away, while by mail, plates can take up to 3 weeks to arrive once DOL has the paperwork. Card payment is not offered at every office, so ask about payment first. Licensing and registering the car is also when use tax is paid, at a rate set by where you live. The Department of Revenue exempts a car that was obtained and used outside Washington more than 90 days before you moved, provided it is licensed here within 30 days of the move. A car purchased during the last 90 days before the move does not qualify.
Visit three, online: the Massachusetts RMV. With Washington plates on the car, cancel the Massachusetts registration online. For a car with two owners the online route is not available: both owners sign the Affidavit for Cancellation of Registration, which then goes to the RMV by mail. Canceling is free. Download the Registration Cancellation Receipt, keep it, and give your insurance company a copy. The RMV does not take plates back, so recycle or destroy them. Once canceled, the car may not be driven on a public way in Massachusetts. An excise abatement may be available through your local assessors office when the cancellation follows a move out of state, but canceling alone does not grant it.
The Washington steps follow the DOL guide to vehicle registration and plates for new residents.
What Happens at Pickup in Massachusetts and Delivery in Washington State?
Decide early where the handover happens in each state, ideally before a carrier takes the order. A full car hauler needs a level, wide piece of road where it can park, drop the loading ramps and get moving again without blocking traffic.
In Massachusetts, wider suburban streets around Worcester, Springfield and the South Shore usually work. The tight brownstone blocks of Boston, triple-decker streets in older city neighborhoods and Cape Cod roads in summer traffic often move the pickup to a shopping center lot or a broad commercial road nearby.
In Washington State, steep residential hills in Seattle and Tacoma, narrow lanes in newer townhome developments and gated communities can mean meeting the driver at a larger lot close by.
Go over the car together with the driver when it is loaded, and confirm that the condition report lists every scratch, chip and dent already on it before you add your signature. Once the car is unloaded in Washington, compare it with that same report, then sign for delivery.

Key Things to Know Before Shipping a Car From Massachusetts to Washington State
Rivalane arranges each Massachusetts to Washington State move from its Melville, New York office, booking the car onto a licensed carrier already headed west and keeping real-time tracking on until the car is delivered. Leave time for paperwork at both ends: Washington gives new residents 30 days after the move to get a driver license and register the car, with the license first, and the Massachusetts registration is canceled with the RMV once the Washington one is done.
Frequently Asked Questions
For an open booking that takes a running sedan from Boston out to Seattle, expect a quote in the $1,350 to $1,900 band, based on recent quotes. A Pittsfield or Springfield pickup trims roughly 90 to 140 miles from the Boston trip, and choosing Spokane as the delivery saves close to 280. A larger SUV, pickup or minivan usually adds $100 to $200, and enclosed service sits 40 to 60 percent higher than open.
In most cases the car is in Washington State 7 to 9 days after it leaves Massachusetts, and lining up the carrier takes one to three working days before the pickup. Among our 64 mapped pairs, Pittsfield to Spokane is shortest at about 2,645 miles, while Hyannis to Bellingham runs about 3,200. Winter weather on I-94 in North Dakota or on I-90 through the Montana and Idaho mountains can slow things down.
They stay with you. The Massachusetts RMV does not take plates back, so once the registration is canceled you recycle or destroy them. Cancel online after the Washington registration is done. A car with two owners needs the Affidavit for Cancellation of Registration instead, signed by both and sent by mail. There is no fee. Save the Registration Cancellation Receipt and send your insurer a copy, and ask your local assessors about an excise abatement, which is not automatic.
Somewhat. Measured to Seattle, Pittsfield is about 140 miles shorter than Boston, Springfield about 90 and Worcester about 40, while Lowell, Brockton and New Bedford land within about 15 miles of the Boston figure and Hyannis adds about 50. Springfield and Pittsfield also take a different road, I-90 across New York, while the other pickups leave by Hartford on I-84. The street counts as well, since a tight city block or a summer Cape Cod road can shift the meeting point to a nearby parking lot.
