Budget $1,150 to $1,700 to move a running sedan from Fargo to Miami on an open trailer, typically delivered 5 to 8 days after loading. Our 64 routed pairs span 1,582 to 2,441 road miles, mainly on I-94 and I-75. Book two to three weeks out, longer in fall, and arrange Florida insurance first.

How Does a North Dakota Car Get to Florida?

We routed 64 pairs between eight North Dakota towns and eight Florida cities, and north dakota to florida car shipping works out to about 1,582 to 2,441 road miles. Every one of those loads crosses the Fargo area, because the western starts at Williston, Minot, Dickinson, Bismarck and Mandan all run east on I-94 past Jamestown before the route bends south. From there, cars bound for the peninsula or Jacksonville go through Paducah, Kentucky and Nashville, then pick up I-75 at Chattanooga and follow it south through Atlanta, Macon and Valdosta, crossing into Florida close to Lake City. Tallahassee is the exception. Fargo loads reach it by way of Nashville and Birmingham, while the other seven starts drop south on I-29 past Sioux Falls, Omaha and Kansas City, then cross Memphis and Birmingham.

What Does It Cost to Ship a Car From North Dakota to Florida?

Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.

Where the car starts in North Dakota moves the price more than where it lands in Florida. To Miami, Fargo is about 2,022 road miles and West Fargo about 2,028, Grand Forks adds roughly 80, Bismarck and Mandan sit near 2,215 and 2,219, Minot and Dickinson come in around 2,288 and 2,312, and Williston is longest at about 2,441.

On the Florida side, Tallahassee and Jacksonville are the short legs. From Fargo they run about 1,601 and 1,706 miles, and Miami adds roughly 420 over Tallahassee at the far end of the peninsula.

Then come the vehicle and the trailer. A pickup, full-size SUV or minivan uses more deck space than a sedan, and a covered trailer carries fewer cars, so each spot on it costs more. Our guide to cross-country car shipping costs shows how these pieces add up.

Season plays a part as well. Searches for this trip climb from late summer into the fall, and pickups in those months can draw firmer quotes than spring ones, so a flexible window is worth more then.

The going rate for a running sedan carried open from Fargo to Miami currently falls between $1,150 and $1,700. To price your own pickup and delivery addresses, try the car shipping calculator.

Bigger vehicles cost more, so plan on about $100 to $200 extra for a full-size SUV, a pickup or a minivan. For covered transport, figure on 40 to 60 percent more.

  • Western pickups. Minot, Dickinson and Williston sit about 266 to 419 more miles from Miami than Fargo does, and that distance shows up in the quote.
  • Florida drop. From every North Dakota start, Tallahassee is the shortest leg and Miami the longest, roughly 421 to 447 miles apart.
  • Season. Fall pickups can price above spring ones, so a few open dates help most from September on.

A quote far below the others often leaves a car waiting for a carrier willing to take it, so treat an outlier with care.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?

Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.

Is It Cheaper to Ship or Drive a Car From North Dakota to Florida?

Shipping Instead of Driving

Shipping makes sense when you fly south and want the car waiting, when a household has two cars to move but just one driver, or when the trip starts in the middle of a North Dakota winter.

Shipping also spares the car about 2,000 miles of wear and saves you the motels, meals and fuel of a drive that runs most of the length of the country.

Driving the Route Yourself

Driving can still win for someone with time off, a second driver and a taste for long road trips. Our routing puts Fargo to Miami at about 37 hours of driving, which with sleep and meal stops stretches to five or six days for most people.

Western starts add more, and Williston to Miami is about 44 hours of driving. Add up fuel, rooms, food and lost work days, then set that total beside the shipping quotes.

How Long Does Car Shipping From North Dakota to Florida Take?

After loading, a North Dakota car typically reaches Florida in 5 to 8 days. West Fargo to Tallahassee, at about 1,582 miles our shortest routed pair, usually lands near the low end, while Williston to Miami, about 2,441 miles, may need the full span.

Before the truck rolls, the order needs a carrier. Rivalane usually settles that within one to three working days. A handful of acceptable pickup dates is what speeds it most.

Trucks on long runs commonly log 400 to 500 miles per day. In winter, a storm that shuts I-94 or I-29 in North Dakota can hold a load for a day before it ever crosses the state line.

When Should You Book Car Shipping From North Dakota to Florida?

Booking two to three weeks before your target pickup works well here, and a little more helps in the fall, when searches for this trip peak. That gives dispatch time to place the car with a carrier already heading south instead of the first one that answers. For the trip back north later, see the Florida to North Dakota route, and for another northern plains start, the Montana to Florida route.

From December through March, snow and cold on I-94 and I-29 can push a North Dakota pickup back by a day or two, so winter plans need some give.

Open or Enclosed Car Shipping From North Dakota to Florida?

Most people on this route book open car transport, where the car rides on a two-level carrier through road salt in the north and summer rain in the south over roughly 2,000 miles.

With enclosed car transport, the vehicle travels behind solid walls and a roof from the North Dakota pickup to the Florida drop. Those trailers hold fewer vehicles, so spots cost more and dates fill sooner.

Choose enclosed for a classic, an exotic, new paint or a low front end. A daily driver normally travels open with no trouble.

Enclosed Car Transport

Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.

Open Car Transport

Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.

Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.

Which Documents Does Florida Want for a North Dakota Car?

Florida starts counting at residency, not at the moment the carrier unloads. FLHSMV counts you as a resident from the first of these: starting a job or a trade in Florida, putting a child into a Florida public school, registering to vote, filing for homestead exemption, or living there longer than six straight months. From then, the car has 10 days to be insured, titled and registered. Each document below does one job at the service center:

  • The Florida insurance card. It proves you carry Personal Injury Protection plus Property Damage Liability, $10,000 or more of each, from a company licensed in Florida, and that coverage has to exist before registration. FLHSMV notes that new residents can ask their agent to convert an existing policy (FLHSMV insurance requirements).
  • The North Dakota title. It proves ownership, so bring the original. When a bank or other lender has the title, contact it about transferring the title to Florida, since the car needs Florida registration either way, and a lender that refuses can give you a letter on its letterhead to take in instead.
  • The VIN and odometer verification. It proves the car matches its papers. The car has to be present, and an official named on the form, such as a licensed Florida dealer or a law enforcement officer, reads the number at the base of the windshield and again in the door jamb. Our Florida VIN verification guide covers where to get it done.
  • Form HSMV 82040 and ID. The title application needs every owner signature, plus proof of identity for each owner.

Your Florida driver license runs on a separate 30 day clock and is applied for in person. The full visit is laid out in our out-of-state car registration guide for Florida.

What to Expect at Pickup in North Dakota and Delivery in Florida

Settle the pickup spot in North Dakota and the delivery spot in Florida before dispatch assigns the order. A full carrier rig needs a wide, level street or a big lot with room to park, drop its ramps and swing back out.

In North Dakota, gravel roads, long farm driveways and snow-packed side streets in winter often move a pickup to a truck stop, a store parking lot or a spot near the interstate. In Florida, gated communities, condo buildings with low garage entrances and HOA limits on large trucks often move delivery to a nearby lot. Our pages on car shipping in North Dakota and car shipping in Florida cover the local details.

At pickup, and again on delivery day, you and the driver check the car over and write every scratch, chip or dent onto the bill of lading. Before the first of those, photograph each side in daylight, and empty the cabin of personal items and loose accessories.

Key Things to Know Before Shipping a Car From North Dakota to Florida

Rivalane coordinates North Dakota to Florida orders from Melville, New York, and pairs each car with a licensed carrier, normally within one to three working days, after which real-time tracking follows it south.
