A sedan on an open trailer from Portland to Miami usually costs $850 to $1,350. Most cars ride the truck for 3 to 6 days over 1,232 to 1,877 road miles, almost all on I-95. Book fall pickups two to three weeks ahead, and line up Florida insurance before the Florida title.
How Car Shipping From Maine to Florida Works
Maine to Florida car shipping is mostly an I-95 trip, but the first stretch depends on where in Maine the car is waiting. Pickups in Portland, Biddeford and Lewiston join the interstate close to home, while Augusta and Bangor cars head south past the capital on I-95 and I-295. Rockland and Bar Harbor sit out on the coast, so those loads use US 1 before they reach the highway, and from Presque Isle the truck first follows US 1 down to Houlton. Every pair we measured then crosses into New Hampshire at Portsmouth, cuts across Massachusetts by way of Worcester, reaches Hartford on I-84 and works through New York, New Jersey, Baltimore and Washington. South of the capital the drive settles into a long run through Virginia and the Carolinas past Fayetteville and Florence, and a Portland to Miami run reaches the midpoint of its mileage in eastern North Carolina. Jacksonville is the closest Florida delivery from every Maine town we checked, while Tampa and Fort Myers cars leave I-95 for I-75 and Tallahassee loads turn west on I-10. Because each hauler loads several vehicles, a pickup close to the interstate and some give in the dates help a Maine car get a spot on a trailer already bound for Florida.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Maine to Florida?
Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.
Mileage drives most of the quote, and both ends of the trip can push it up or down. Across 64 pairs linking eight Maine towns with eight Florida cities, Biddeford to Jacksonville comes out shortest at about 1,232 road miles and Presque Isle to Miami longest at roughly 1,877.
From Portland a car covers about 1,247 miles to Jacksonville, 1,388 to Orlando, 1,408 to Tallahassee and 1,444 to Tampa, against about 1,592 to Miami. Our car shipping in Florida page covers delivery points all over the state.
The starting point within Maine can change the Miami distance by about 300 miles. Biddeford and Portland sit closest, Lewiston, Augusta and Rockland add between about 30 and 80 miles, Bangor and Bar Harbor add well over a hundred, and Presque Isle up in Aroostook County goes farthest.
Vehicle size and season matter as well. Pickup trucks and long vans use up more of a trailer level than a small sedan does, and fall pickups heading south usually cost more than spring or summer ones on this route. A price well below every other quote is worth doubting until a carrier signs on for the job. For a first number, enter both addresses in the car shipping calculator.

Moving a running sedan by open trailer from Portland to Miami runs $850 to $1,350. Southern Maine pickups bound for Jacksonville tend to land under the middle of that range, while Bangor, Bar Harbor and Aroostook County cars going all the way to Miami sit closer to the top.
Budget $100 to $200 on top of that for a large SUV, pickup or van. A covered trailer pushes the bill up by roughly 40 to 60 percent compared with open.
Three things move a Maine to Florida quote the most:
- Snowbird season. Between September and November Maine snowbirds send their cars south, and that extra demand fills southbound decks and pushes rates up. Trailers generally have more room from spring through summer.
- Distance from the interstate. A house close to I-95 or I-295 is simple for a southbound truck to reach. A village at the end of a coastal peninsula, a camp road inland or a farm in Aroostook County can take extra time to collect from.
- The Florida end. The run to Jacksonville is the shortest from any Maine town and Miami the longest, and a guard gate or a condo tower driveway at either end often means meeting the truck on a public street instead.
Be careful with any figure far below this range until a carrier actually agrees to haul the car.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?
Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.
Is It Cheaper to Drive or Ship a Car From Maine to Florida?
When Shipping Makes Sense
Shipping is the easier call for a snowbird planning to fly down and pick the car up in Florida, a couple retiring there for good, or anyone with two cars to move and a single driver.
It also saves the return leg. Drive a Portland car to Miami yourself and you finish roughly 1,590 miles from home, usually followed by a one way flight north after three days or more behind the wheel.
Driving It Yourself
Driving can still come out cheaper for a couple heading south together with a full trunk, and we will say so when that is the case. Our routing estimate puts Portland to Miami at roughly 30 hours of driving, usually spread across three or four days once fuel stops, meals and a few motel nights are counted.
Shipping wins when nobody really needs to make that drive. From Presque Isle the trip to Miami stretches to about 1,877 miles, and whoever drives it still has to get back to Maine.
How Long Does It Take to Ship a Car From Maine to Florida?
After loading, a Maine car is typically on the road for 3 to 6 days. Biddeford or Portland loads going to Jacksonville tend to finish at the quick end, Portland to Miami usually falls in the middle, and Presque Isle or Bar Harbor cars bound for Miami or Fort Lauderdale can take up the full range.
Getting a truck assigned is often the longer wait. Matching the car to a truck usually takes one to three working days, a stretch that grows a little during the fall rush.
A loaded hauler drops cars one at a time as it heads south, so a Miami delivery may sit behind a few stops farther up the coast. A spread of possible pickup days, rather than one set date, usually gets the car loaded faster.
When Is the Best Time to Book Auto Transport From Maine to Florida?
Southbound space tightens in the fall, when Maine snowbirds and other New England retirees send cars to Florida before winter sets in. Our snowbird shipping guide covers that season step by step.
For a pickup between September and November, book about two to three weeks out from the date you want. Outside those months, booking ten days to two weeks ahead generally does the job, and a loose pickup window lets dispatch use the first Florida-bound truck with an open slot.
Maine winters can cost a day or two. From December through March a snowstorm can hold a pickup back, most often in Aroostook County and the western mountains rather than along the southern coast.
Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport on a Maine to Florida Route
Open transport carries most Maine cars to Florida, on the two level haulers that work the I-95 corridor. Across roughly 1,590 miles from Portland to Miami the paint sees about what a long highway drive would give it, and winter pickups often show up in Florida coated in road salt.
With enclosed transport the car rides behind solid walls, out of the rain, sun, salt spray and road grit from Maine to the Florida curb. Covered trailers carry far fewer vehicles than open ones, so each enclosed spot costs more and books up sooner in the fall.
The extra cost makes sense for collector cars, exotics, show cars and freshly painted vehicles. Everyday drivers, crossovers and most snowbird sedans ride open.
Enclosed Car Transport
Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.
Open Car Transport
Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.
Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.
What Florida Requires When Your Car Arrives
Florida paperwork follows residency, so a winter season and a permanent move call for different steps. Work through them in this order.
Step one: check whether Florida counts you as a resident. The FLHSMV list of residency signals covers taking up employment or a trade, profession or occupation in Florida, enrolling children in public school there, voter registration in the state, a homestead tax exemption filing, and living there more than six consecutive months. A shorter winter visit with none of those other ties does not meet the definition.
Step two: assemble the title packet. The packet needs ID for each owner, Florida insurance proof from an agent licensed in that state, the original title issued outside Florida, and HSMV 82040 carrying the signature of every owner. If a lender holds the title, it has to be contacted to transfer the title to Florida. The VIN must be physically inspected and recorded on HSMV 82040 or HSMV 82042 by a law enforcement officer, a military police officer, a licensed Florida dealer, an FLHSMV compliance examiner or an employee of a county tax collector. Setting that up is covered in our guide to the Florida VIN check.
Step three: register and get a license in person. Registration comes at the same in-person titling visit at a local service center, and the initial registration fee of $225 applies when you have no Florida plate to transfer. That appointment is laid out in our Florida registration walkthrough for cars from other states. Within 30 days after residency begins you also need a Florida driver license, and that application is made in person too.
Step four: close things out in Maine. Maine law treats registration plates as state property. Once the Maine registration has ended and you do not plan to renew it or move the plates to another vehicle within six months, take the plates off and send them with the registration certificate to the Secretary of State. Ending a registration early goes through the BMV plate cancellation request, form MVR-60, which must be notarized and signed by everyone on the registration. A car that keeps its Maine plates through the winter still renews in Maine, where the municipal excise tax is paid before the registration goes through, as our Maine vehicle excise tax guide explains.

Requirements can be revised, so check the current rules with both states before the car ships.
What to Expect at Pickup and Delivery
Settle both meeting points early, while the truck is still being arranged, because a full car carrier needs a long straight stretch to stop and room to pull back onto the road.
In Maine, suburban streets in South Portland, Scarborough and around Lewiston usually leave room near the house. The tight streets of the Old Port, steep lanes on Munjoy Hill and long gravel driveways out in the country often move the meeting to a store lot or a wider paved road close by.
In Florida, plenty of gated communities and oceanfront condo buildings stop large trucks at the entrance, so the handover takes place on a public street or lot just outside. Ordinary neighborhoods in Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa normally have curb space.
When the car goes on the truck, look over each mark the driver writes on the condition report before you add your signature, since delivery is compared against it. Before the truck pulls away in Maine, take time-stamped pictures of the front, back and both sides, and compare the car with those pictures at the Florida curb before signing for delivery.

Key Things to Know Before Shipping a Car From Maine to Florida
Rivalane works out of Melville, New York, matches each Maine car with a Florida-bound truck that has room on the deck, and you can follow the car with real-time tracking until it is delivered. Leaving Maine for good means taking the plates off and sending them with the registration certificate to the Secretary of State once the Maine registration ends and you have no plan to renew it or move the plates to another car within six months.
Frequently Asked Questions
A running sedan going from Portland to Miami on an open trailer costs $850 to $1,350. Southern Maine pickups bound for Jacksonville usually price toward the lower end, and Bangor, Bar Harbor or Aroostook County cars heading to Miami toward the top. For a large SUV, pickup or van allow $100 to $200 more, a covered trailer pushes the open price up by roughly 40 to 60 percent, and fall rates climb once Maine snowbirds begin booking south.
Most Maine cars reach Florida 3 to 6 days after loading, and Portland to Miami usually lands near the middle of that window. Dispatch typically finds a truck in one to three working days after the booking, though fall bookings can take a bit longer. Of the 64 pairs we measured, Biddeford to Jacksonville was the shortest and Presque Isle to Miami the longest.
Maine law treats registration plates as state property. When your Maine registration ends and you do not intend to renew it or transfer the plates to another vehicle within six months, take the plates off and return them to the Secretary of State together with the registration certificate. To end the registration sooner, the BMV plate cancellation request, form MVR-60, has to be notarized and signed by every person on the registration, then taken to a BMV branch office or mailed to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Generally yes. Maine asks for plates back when a registration ends and will not be renewed, so a Maine car spending the winter in Florida and heading back north in spring keeps its plates as long as the registration stays current. Maine requires proof of insurance to register a vehicle, and a passenger registration runs one year from issue, so keep the policy in force and plan the renewal date around the trip. Florida decides residency on its own: FLHSMV can count you as a resident once you work in the state, register to vote, claim a homestead exemption, enroll a child in public school there, or stay more than six consecutive months.
