How Car Shipping From Florida to Delaware Works

Florida to Delaware car shipping starts wherever the car sits in the state, and every route we measured is on I-95 by Yulee, just short of the Georgia line. Cars picked up in Miami, Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach travel up the Atlantic side past Fort Pierce, Melbourne and St Augustine. Orlando loads reach I-95 at Daytona Beach. Tampa and Fort Myers cars climb I-75 to Wildwood and then follow US 301 north through Starke and Callahan, while Tallahassee cars head east on I-10 past Lake City and meet US 301 at Baldwin. Past the state line the shared run crosses Georgia at Brunswick, then goes by Florence, South Carolina, Fayetteville and Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and Emporia, Virginia. A Miami to Wilmington trip reaches its midpoint near Santee, South Carolina. The Delaware end splits three ways: Wilmington and Newark loads keep to the I-95 corridor through Baltimore, Middletown, Dover and Milford cross Maryland past Annapolis on US 50, and Sussex County deliveries leave I-95 after Emporia for Norfolk and the US 13 run up the Delmarva Peninsula.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Florida to Delaware?

Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.

Of the 64 pairs we measured, eight Florida cities against eight Delaware towns with a sample confirmed by a second routing source, the shortest was Jacksonville to Seaford at about 771 road miles and the longest Miami to Wilmington at about 1,173. Most of the quote follows that mileage, and the Florida pickup moves it far more than the Delaware drop.

Bound for Wilmington, a Jacksonville car covers about 829 miles, Orlando about 969, Tallahassee about 985 and Tampa about 1,020. South Florida sits farther out, from about 1,111 miles at West Palm Beach to 1,173 at Miami, with Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale at about 1,138 and 1,147. Our Florida car shipping page covers pickups anywhere else in the state.

Inside Delaware, the delivery town shifts the distance by less than 60 miles. Seaford is the nearest drop from every Florida city we measured, and Wilmington the farthest.

Vehicle size and the calendar count too. A long pickup or full-size van needs more room on the trailer than a compact car, and spring loads heading north usually price above fall and winter ones. For a figure tied to your exact addresses, try our car shipping calculator. Cars moving the opposite way have a page of their own, Delaware to Florida car shipping, which covers the fall rush and Florida titling.

Compass with its needle pointing north, ringed by car, calendar, map pin and car carrier icons, the factors behind Florida to Delaware car shipping costs

Heading north on an open carrier, a running sedan collected in Miami and dropped in Wilmington runs $850 to $1,300. Jacksonville pickups going to Sussex County usually come in toward the lower part of that range, while Miami and Fort Lauderdale cars bound for Wilmington or Newark sit nearer the top.

A larger vehicle such as a full-size SUV, pickup truck or van usually adds $100 to $200. Picking an enclosed trailer raises the open figure by something like 40 to 60 percent.

Three things do most of the moving inside the range:

  • The spring trip home. From March into May, Delaware and other Mid-Atlantic snowbirds book northbound at about the same time, so trailers leaving Florida fill sooner and rates rise. Fall and winter usually leave more open spots heading north.
  • Access at the Florida pickup. High-rise condos and gated neighborhoods in South Florida often turn big rigs away at the gate, so the handover may move to a nearby public street. A house a few minutes from I-95 or I-75 is the easiest kind of pickup to fit in.
  • The Delaware address. Wilmington and Newark sit on I-95 itself, while Dover, Milford and the Sussex County towns lie off it, and a tight rowhouse block or a long farm lane can take extra time to arrange.

If one quote lands far below the others, ask what it leaves out before you commit.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?

Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Diagram showing smaller vehicles fitting more cars with higher capacity and larger vehicles fitting fewer cars with lower capacity.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.

Is It Cheaper to Drive or Ship a Car From Florida to Delaware?

When Shipping Is the Better Call

Shipping suits snowbirds flying home to Delaware once the Florida season ends, families relocating north with more cars than drivers, and service members heading to Dover Air Force Base.

It also spares someone a long round trip. A relative who drives Miami to Wilmington spends two or three days on I-95 and then needs a flight back south.

Driving It North Yourself

For two people traveling north together with a loaded trunk, driving can still come out cheaper, and we will tell you plainly when it does. The routing estimate puts Miami to Wilmington at about 22 hours behind the wheel, which in practice means two nights on the road plus fuel, meals and tolls.

Shipping pays off when nobody needs to ride along. Even the shortest pairing we measured, Jacksonville to Seaford, is about 771 miles.

How Long Does It Take to Ship a Car From Florida to Delaware?

After loading, a Florida car is typically on the road 2 to 5 days before it reaches Delaware. Jacksonville runs to Sussex County usually finish near the short end, Miami to Wilmington tends to land in the middle, and a car with several drops ahead of it on the trailer can use the whole window.

Matching the car with a northbound carrier comes first, and that step normally runs one to three working days and can stretch a little in spring.

A hauler delivers in the order of its route, so a Dover or Rehoboth Beach car may wait behind stops in Virginia or Maryland. Giving dispatch several possible pickup days instead of a single date tends to get the car onto a truck faster.

When Is the Best Time to Book Auto Transport From Florida to Delaware?

Northbound space out of Florida gets tighter in spring, when snowbirds who wintered in the state head back to Delaware and the rest of the Mid-Atlantic. Our guide to seasonal auto shipping for snowbirds walks through both legs of the year.

For a March, April or May pickup, contact us three to four weeks ahead of your target day. Outside spring, about ten days of notice is usually enough, and a few flexible days let dispatch take the first northbound truck with room.

Summer storms in Florida sometimes hold a pickup for a day or so, and a winter storm at the Delaware end can do the same.

Open vs Enclosed Auto Transport on a Florida to Delaware Route

Most Florida cars travel to Delaware by open transport, on the two-level trailers that carry cars up and down I-95. Over roughly 1,173 miles from Miami to Wilmington the car meets about what a long road trip would bring, and after a few days of spring showers it can arrive with a film of road dust and pollen.

Pay for enclosed transport and the car travels walled in and roofed over from the Florida pickup to the Delaware drop, shielded from sun, rain and grit. Those trailers hold only a handful of cars, so space costs more and can fill early in spring.

A covered trailer makes sense for collector cars, exotics, show vehicles and fresh paint. Most daily drivers and snowbird sedans ride open.

Enclosed Car Transport

Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.

Open Car Transport

Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.

Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.

What Delaware Requires When Your Car Arrives

Delaware gives new residents 60 days from the day they become residents to title and register their vehicles, and the same 60 days to get a Delaware driver license. The visit, step by step, is laid out in our article on Delaware registration for out-of-state cars.

Insurance comes first. The DMV wants a valid insurance ID card for the car, kept in the vehicle, showing the coverage period and the NAIC code of the insurer. A card that is not valid is turned away.

The car goes to the DMV. An inspection at a Division of Motor Vehicles office is the second step toward a Delaware title, so plan the trip there soon after delivery. The inspection technician issues the MV-212 application for the title and registration.

A lender holding the title. When a bank or credit union still holds the Florida title, the DMV provides form letter MV-35 to send the lienholder so it can release the certificate of title.

Closing out Florida. FLHSMV asks anyone who has moved to register the car in the new state, and while a car still carries a Florida registration, Florida insurance has to stay on it. Surrender the Florida plate and decal before you cancel the Florida policy, in person at a county tax collector office or by mail with a signed statement and a copy of your photo ID. Both options are explained in how to turn in a Florida plate.

Sources: the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles new resident guidelines and general FAQ, plus the FLHSMV insurance requirements page and procedure RS-43. Rules change, so confirm them with each agency before the car leaves Florida.

What to Expect at Pickup and Delivery

Fix both handover points before dispatch. A loaded hauler is long, and the driver needs a straight, wide stretch of road to stop and then pull away again.

On the Florida side, many high-rise condos and gated neighborhoods in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties do not let large trucks in, so the car may be handed over on a public street or in a shopping center lot nearby. Many subdivisions around Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville have room at the curb.

In Delaware, suburban streets in Newark, Middletown and Dover usually leave space close to the driveway. Narrow Wilmington rowhouse blocks, busy summer streets in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes, and long Sussex County farm lanes often mean meeting the truck on a wider road instead.

At pickup, go around the car together with the driver and read every note on the condition report before you sign, because delivery is checked against it. Take dated pictures of every side of the car before the truck pulls away in Florida, and line them up against the car when it reaches Delaware.
