A running sedan shipped open from Philadelphia to Los Angeles generally lands around $1,150 to $1,650. Across the 64 town pairs we measured, the trip covers about 2,393 to 2,911 road miles on I-40 or I-80, and delivery usually follows 6 to 9 days after pickup. What Route Does a Car Take From Pennsylvania to California?

Pennsylvania to California car shipping covers about 2,393 to 2,911 road miles, and the road a car takes depends on where it is going. We routed 64 town pairs and cross-checked the mileage with a second calculator. Southern California loads from Philadelphia, Allentown, Harrisburg and Lancaster run I-76 west to I-70, and Pittsburgh cars join I-70 close to home. From there the route passes Columbus, Indianapolis and St. Louis, takes I-44 to Tulsa and then follows I-40 past Amarillo, Albuquerque and Flagstaff, which makes I-40 the longest single road on 27 pairs. Every load bound for San Jose, San Francisco or Sacramento uses I-80 instead, past Des Moines, Omaha, Salt Lake City and Reno, so I-80 leads on 37 pairs. Erie, Scranton and State College cars start on I-80 even when Southern California is the goal: Erie cars reach it by I-90, and in Nebraska these loads turn off for Denver, cross Colorado and Utah on I-70 and finish on I-15 past Las Vegas and Barstow. The exception is San Diego, where Scranton and State College cars take the I-40 route as well.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Pennsylvania to California?

Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.

On this route the pickup town moves the total almost as much as the delivery city. Measured to Los Angeles, Pittsburgh runs about 285 road miles shorter than Philadelphia and Erie about 265 shorter. State College sits near 2,570 miles, Harrisburg and Lancaster land between 2,610 and 2,650, and Allentown and Scranton come in close to Philadelphia at about 2,690 to 2,710. Picking up somewhere else in the state? Our Pennsylvania car shipping page lists more pickup areas.

At the California end, Riverside is the closest of the eight delivery cities we routed from Philadelphia, at about 2,680 miles. Irvine and Los Angeles come in near 2,715 and San Diego near 2,740, then Sacramento close to 2,790 and Fresno near 2,840, while San Francisco and San Jose run longest at about 2,880 and 2,910. Delivering elsewhere? The California car shipping page covers more cities.

Vehicle size and season explain most of what is left. A full-size SUV or pickup takes a larger position on the trailer, and winter weather on the plains or in the western mountains can slow the trip. Our guide to cross-country shipping costs goes deeper on long-distance pricing, and you can price your own two towns right away in the car shipping calculator.

For a running sedan on an open carrier, Philadelphia to Los Angeles generally sits between $1,150 and $1,650 on current quotes. Distance between your two towns sets most of the spread, and our longest routed pair is about 520 road miles longer than the shortest.

A full-size SUV, pickup or minivan usually adds $150 to $250 to that figure. For enclosed transport, expect a price 40 to 60 percent higher than open.

Three things shift the quote most here:

  • Where it starts. Pittsburgh and Erie sit roughly 265 to 285 miles closer to Los Angeles than Philadelphia does.
  • Where it ends. Riverside, Irvine and Los Angeles sit closest, while San Francisco and San Jose add the most miles.
  • When it ships. Lake-effect snow near Erie can hold up a winter pickup, and mountain snow farther west can slow the run.

Be wary of any quote that comes in far below the others before you commit.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?

Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.

Is It Better to Ship or Drive Your Car From Pennsylvania to California?

Reasons to Ship

Shipping fits a Pittsburgh or Philadelphia household heading west for a new job, a California buyer who found the right car at a Pennsylvania dealership or private sale, and a family relocating with two cars and only one willing driver. The car makes the trip on the carrier while you handle the rest of the move.

It also skips around 2,700 miles of wear, along with the fuel, motel nights and meals a cross-country drive adds up. Sending a car south for the winter instead? Our Pennsylvania to Florida car shipping route covers that trip.

Reasons to Drive

A pair of drivers with time to spare and no arrival deadline can sometimes spend less by driving the car themselves, and Rivalane will tell you if that looks true for your move. Philadelphia to Los Angeles comes to roughly 48 hours of driving on our routing, which stretches across five or six days once rest stops, meals and overnight stays are counted.

Solo movers with a job start date usually come out ahead by shipping, because the shortest pair we mapped, Pittsburgh to Riverside, still covers close to 2,400 miles.

How Long Does It Take to Ship a Car From Pennsylvania to California?

Most deliveries in California typically land 6 to 9 days from the loading date. The shortest pair, Pittsburgh to Riverside at about 2,400 miles, generally arrives near the start of that window, and the longest, Philadelphia to San Jose at about 2,910, typically uses most of it.

A carrier is normally confirmed one to three working days after booking with Rivalane, and flexible pickup dates open the order to more westbound trucks.

On the Philadelphia to Los Angeles run the halfway mark falls in central Oklahoma, while Bay Area and Sacramento loads pass their midpoint in Nebraska. Between December and March, snow on I-80 across Wyoming and the Sierra Nevada or on I-40 in the high country of New Mexico and Arizona can add a day or two, and lake-effect storms around Erie can delay a pickup.

How Far Ahead Should You Book a Car Shipment From Pennsylvania to California?

Try to book two to three weeks before the car is ready to leave. That window lets Rivalane pair the car with a licensed carrier already scheduled to head west with an open position on its trailer, rather than settling for whichever truck answers first.

Tell us at booking if the pickup date is fixed, because a date that cannot shift limits which trucks can take the order. In winter, build in a little slack for lake-effect snow in northwest Pennsylvania and mountain weather out west.

Moving a second car out of New York City? The New York to California car shipping route also follows I-40 west.

Should You Choose Open or Enclosed Transport From Pennsylvania to California?

Open transport on a standard two-level carrier is how most cars make this trip. Across roughly 2,700 miles the car meets what a road trip would bring: winter road salt leaving Pennsylvania, then dust, grit and hard sun across the Southwest.

Book enclosed transport and the car spends the entire trip inside a hard-sided trailer, protected from rain, snow and road debris. Because an enclosed trailer carries fewer cars, the price is higher and short-notice bookings can take longer to fill.

Collector cars, exotics and cars with fresh paint generally go enclosed, while everyday cars generally go open.

Enclosed Car Transport

Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.

Open Car Transport

Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.

Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.

The Documents a Pennsylvania Car Needs for California Registration

This move involves paperwork in two states. California wants the car registered within its deadline, and Pennsylvania asks for its plate back. The items below are the documents each state asks about.

The deadline and the residency test. California asks you to register a car last registered in another state within 20 days of becoming a resident or of bringing the car into the state. You count as a resident if you plan to spend at least six months of each year in California, and signs such as a job in California, voter registration, a rented home that is your primary residence or a California driver license all point that way.

Title. Bring the last title issued for the car and the REG 343 application, with every registered owner signing it. If you cannot surrender the Pennsylvania title, the California card comes stamped Nontransferable, and California does not issue its own title.

Registration card. California also asks for the last out-of-state registration certificate. Hold on to copies after the move: if PennDOT later sends a letter about insurance on the car, it asks owners whose car is now registered in another state for a copy of that registration card or the title.

Verification form. Someone has to inspect the car and fill in a REG 31 verification: a law enforcement officer, an authorized DMV employee or a vehicle verifier licensed in California.

Smog certificate. Gasoline vehicles from 1976 and newer need smog certification, and so do diesels from 1998 and newer with a gross vehicle weight rating below 14,001 pounds, while motorcycles are exempt. A car that is under 2 years old and shows fewer than 7,500 odometer miles cannot be brought in or registered unless it meets California emission standards from the factory or qualifies for an exemption.

Insurance card. Pennsylvania insurers report canceled policies to PennDOT. After you cancel the Pennsylvania policy, the plate and registration card have to reach PennDOT within 30 days, counted from the cancellation rather than from any notice, or the registration is suspended for three months.

The Pennsylvania plate. California generally collects out-of-state plates at registration, and the main exceptions are expired plates and plates their home state wants back. PennDOT asks departing owners to post the plate back to the Return Tag Unit in Harrisburg after the California plate arrives, then marks it on the record as a dead tag to guard against fraudulent use, so ask at the DMV counter which applies to you. Registration, transfer and use tax fees apply, and the DMV recommends filing on time even while a requirement is still outstanding, to stay clear of penalties. For a walkthrough of the DMV visit itself, see our California out-of-state registration steps.

Confirm the current rules with both agencies before shipping, since requirements and fees can change.

What Happens at Pickup in Pennsylvania and Delivery in California?

Choose where the car will be handed over at both ends before the carrier is booked. A fully loaded hauler is a long rig and needs space to pull over, set down its ramps and get moving again.

In Pennsylvania, the narrow rowhouse blocks of Philadelphia and the steep hillside streets of many Pittsburgh neighborhoods rarely fit the truck, so pickups there often meet in a large store or mall lot near the interstate. Suburban streets around Harrisburg, Lancaster and the Lehigh Valley usually leave more space.

The California end works the same way. Hilly San Francisco streets, dense beach neighborhoods and gated communities tend to push the handoff to a nearby lot, while the wider streets of Riverside, Fresno and Sacramento often have room at the curb.

At pickup, inspect the car alongside the driver and confirm every existing chip, scratch or dent is on the condition report before you sign. At delivery, compare the car with that report and take dated photos of each side.

What Should You Know Before Shipping a Car From Pennsylvania to California?

Rivalane coordinates each order from its Melville, New York office, matches the car with a licensed carrier headed west and provides real-time tracking through delivery. After you become a California resident the car has to be registered there within 20 days, and PennDOT wants the Pennsylvania plate mailed back once the California plate is issued.
