Which Roads Carry a Car From Rhode Island to California?

Rhode Island to California car shipping covers about 2,892 to 3,125 road miles. We routed 64 pairs of towns and checked them against a second mileage calculator, and I-80 is the longest single road on 56 of them. Two roads take cars out of the state. From Providence, Pawtucket, East Providence and Woonsocket, the route runs west on I-84 past Hartford and Danbury to Scranton, Pennsylvania, with Woonsocket cars passing Worcester first. Warwick, Cranston, Newport and Westerly cars follow I-95 down the Connecticut shore past New Haven and through New York City, then pick up I-80 in New Jersey. Both groups cross Pennsylvania on I-80 and pass Youngstown, Ohio, and most keep to it through Indiana, Illinois and Iowa, past Des Moines, Omaha and Lincoln. Out in western Nebraska, loads for Los Angeles, Riverside, Irvine and Fresno turn toward Denver and take I-70 over Colorado and Utah, then I-15 past Las Vegas and Barstow. Sacramento, San Francisco and San Jose cars hold I-80 past Cheyenne, Salt Lake City and Reno. San Diego is the exception: those cars leave I-80 in Ohio, pick up I-70 at Columbus and follow it past Indianapolis and St. Louis, then I-44 and I-40 through Tulsa, Amarillo, Albuquerque and Flagstaff.

How Much Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Rhode Island to California?

Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.

Where the car is going in California changes the miles more than where it starts. From Providence, Riverside is the nearest of our eight delivery cities at about 2,940 road miles, Irvine and Los Angeles land near 2,970, and Sacramento and San Diego are both close to 3,000. The Bay Area and the Central Valley sit farther out: San Francisco near 3,090, Fresno near 3,100 and San Jose near 3,120. Delivering somewhere else in the state? Our California car shipping page covers more cities.

Inside Rhode Island the pickup town barely moves the total. Measured to Los Angeles, Westerly runs about 45 miles shorter than Providence, and Warwick, Cranston, Newport, Pawtucket, East Providence and Woonsocket all land within 10 miles of it. More pickup areas are on our Rhode Island car shipping page.

What remains comes down to the vehicle and the time of year. A large SUV or pickup claims a bigger slot on the trailer, and winter snow in the Rockies or on the high plains of Wyoming can stretch the western leg. For more on long-distance rates, read our breakdown of cross-country shipping costs, or enter your own towns in the car shipping calculator to see an estimate right away.

Moving a running sedan open from Providence to Los Angeles will usually fall between $1,250 and $1,750 at current rates. Where you land in that range depends mostly on the distance between your two towns, and across our routing the longest pair covers about 230 more road miles than the shortest.

Add about $150 to $250 for a full-size SUV, pickup or minivan, which uses a larger position on the carrier. Choosing an enclosed trailer typically raises the open figure by roughly 40 to 60 percent.

The biggest price swings on this route come from:

  • Delivery city. Riverside, Irvine and Los Angeles are the closest California stops, and San Francisco, Fresno and San Jose the farthest.
  • Pickup town. Westerly saves a little distance, and the rest of Rhode Island sits within about 10 miles of Providence on the way to Los Angeles.
  • Season. A New England snowstorm can delay a pickup, and snow in the Rockies can slow the run west in winter.

A quote that undercuts the rest by a wide margin is worth questioning before you book.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?

Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Diagram showing smaller vehicles fitting more cars with higher capacity and larger vehicles fitting fewer cars with lower capacity.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.

Is It Better to Ship or Drive Your Car From Rhode Island to California?

Reasons to Ship

Shipping suits a Rhode Island household relocating for work in Southern California or the Bay Area, a California resident who bought a car from a seller in Rhode Island, and a couple taking two cars west when only one of them wants the long drive. The car rides the carrier while everyone else gets on with the move.

The car also avoids roughly 3,000 miles of wear, and nobody pays for the gas, tire wear and motel rooms a cross-country drive runs up. Moving somewhere warmer in the South instead? Our Rhode Island to Florida car shipping route covers that run.

Reasons to Drive

Two drivers who can split the hours and have no fixed arrival date may spend less by driving, and Rivalane will say so if that is the case. Providence to Los Angeles works out to about 53 hours behind the wheel on our routing, which turns into most of a week once fuel stops, meals and overnight stays are added.

For one person with a start date to meet, shipping is usually the better call, because even the shortest pair we mapped, Westerly to Riverside, is roughly 2,890 miles. Heading to Texas instead? See our Rhode Island to Texas car shipping route.

How Long Does It Take to Ship a Car From Rhode Island to California?

Most cars arrive in California 7 to 9 days after they are loaded. The shortest pair, Westerly to Riverside at about 2,890 miles, typically lands at the early end of that window, while the longest, Woonsocket to San Jose at about 3,125, usually needs most of it.

After you book, Rivalane normally has your carrier lined up in one to three working days, and flexible pickup dates widen the pool of westbound trucks that can take the car.

On the Providence to Los Angeles run, the midpoint falls just west of Lincoln, Nebraska. From December through March, winter weather can add a day or two, whether it is snow across the Wyoming stretch of I-80 or on I-70 in the Colorado Rockies, and a coastal storm in Rhode Island can push back a pickup.

How Far Ahead Should You Book a Car Shipment From Rhode Island to California?

Booking two to three weeks before your pickup date works well on this route. That lead time lets Rivalane find a licensed carrier whose westbound trip is already scheduled and still has an open spot on the trailer, instead of taking the first truck that calls back.

Mention a fixed pickup date at the time of booking, because a date that cannot move narrows the trucks that can make it. Over the winter months, leave a little room in the plan for New England storms and mountain snow farther west.

Shipping a second car from Connecticut? The Connecticut to California car shipping route follows I-80 west as well.

Should You Choose Open or Enclosed Transport From Rhode Island to California?

Most cars on this route travel by open transport, on the standard two-level carrier. Over roughly 3,000 miles the car sees the same conditions a road trip would bring: salt spray and slush from a winter departure in New England, then dust and strong sun across the West.

With enclosed transport, the car travels in a hard-sided trailer from pickup to delivery, shielded from rain, snow and flying grit. Because each enclosed trailer carries fewer vehicles, it costs more, and finding one on short notice can take extra days.

Classic cars, exotics and freshly painted vehicles usually go enclosed, and daily drivers usually go open.

Enclosed Car Transport

Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.

Open Car Transport

Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.

Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.

Registering a Rhode Island Car in California After the Move

Two states are involved in this move: Rhode Island needs to close out the old registration, and California needs the car registered within its deadline.

Before the car leaves Rhode Island. Rhode Island requires a registered car to carry active liability insurance for as long as the registration lasts, and every registration is subject to excise tax in the city or town where the car is registered or kept. That is why the Rhode Island DMV asks owners to cancel the registration once the car stops being used there.

Arriving in California. The state wants an out-of-state car registered within 20 days of you becoming a resident there or of the car being brought into the state. You are treated as a resident if you intend to live in California at least half of each year, and a job in the state, California voter registration, renting a home there as your main residence or a California driver license each point to residency.

What to bring to the DMV. The DMV needs form REG 343 with the signatures of all registered owners, the last out-of-state title and registration card issued for the car, and a REG 31 vehicle verification, which a California-licensed vehicle verifier, an authorized DMV employee or a law enforcement officer can complete. Without the Rhode Island title, the California registration card is marked Nontransferable and no California title is issued. Registration, transfer and use tax fees are worked out when you apply, and the DMV advises sending the application and fees on time even if another item is still missing, to avoid penalties.

Smog and nearly new cars. A smog certification is needed for gasoline vehicles from model year 1976 onward and for diesels from 1998 onward under 14,001 pounds gross vehicle weight rating, and motorcycles are exempt. A separate rule covers nearly new cars: if you acquired the car with fewer than 7,500 miles when it was less than 2 years old, California residents cannot register it or bring it into the state unless the factory built it to California emission specifications, or an exemption applies.

Closing out the Rhode Island plates. California generally takes the out-of-state plates at registration, unless they have expired, must go back to the issuing state or belong to an interstate-registered vehicle. On the Rhode Island side, the DMV cancels registrations online and emails a confirmation to keep as proof for tax purposes, after which the plates can be destroyed or recycled rather than returned. Mail and branch drop box cancellations need a copy of the owner photo ID or the registration, and a TR-3 receipt comes back only if you include a postage-paid return envelope. Each method is laid out in our Rhode Island registration cancellation guide, and our step by step California registration guide covers the DMV visit.

This section draws on the Rhode Island DMV page about canceling plates and registrations and, from the California DMV, the New California Resident Portal and the How To brochure for registering a vehicle from out of state. Rules and fees change, so check with both agencies before the car ships.

What Happens at Pickup in Rhode Island and Delivery in California?

Pick a meeting place at each end before the carrier is assigned. A full car hauler is a big, heavy rig that needs space to pull over, lower its ramps and pull away again.

In Rhode Island, wider streets in Warwick, Cranston and the larger towns near I-95 can often fit the truck. Narrow streets on the East Side of Providence, the old lanes of downtown Newport and tight cul-de-sacs usually cannot, so many pickups meet at a store or shopping center parking lot near the highway.

California follows the same pattern. Steep streets in San Francisco, crowded coastal neighborhoods and gated communities often move the handoff to a nearby lot, while roomier streets around Riverside, Sacramento and Fresno usually leave enough space.

Walk around the car with the driver before signing at pickup and make sure every existing scratch or dent is noted on the condition report. When the car comes off at delivery, compare it with that report and take your own dated photos of every side.

What Should You Know Before Shipping a Car From Rhode Island to California?

Rivalane coordinates every order out of its Melville, New York office, finds a licensed carrier heading west for the car and provides real-time tracking until delivery. Once you are a California resident you have 20 days to register the car there, and Rhode Island expects the registration to be canceled once the car is no longer in use in the state, which avoids further excise tax and insurance fines.
