An open carrier spot for a running sedan, Burlington to Los Angeles, costs about $1,350 to $1,900. Measured over 64 town pairs, the trip covers about 2,818 to 3,184 road miles, mostly on I-80, with most deliveries landing 7 to 9 days after loading. A booking made two to three weeks ahead gives Rivalane more carriers to match.

What Route Does a Car Take From Vermont to California?

Vermont to California car shipping covers about 2,818 to 3,184 road miles over 64 pairs of towns that we routed and cross-checked on a second mileage calculator, and on every pair I-80 carries the car farther than any other road. The trip starts on I-90 in New York. Bennington and Brattleboro cars reach it near Albany on NY 7, Burlington, St. Albans and Montpelier cars come down I-87 to the Albany area, and Rutland cars, along with St. Johnsbury and Newport cars that first run down I-91 to White River Junction, cross into New York on US 4 and join I-90 west of Albany. I-90 then passes Syracuse, Buffalo and Cleveland before I-80 takes over in northern Ohio for the run through Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska, past Des Moines, Omaha and Lincoln. In western Nebraska the loads split. Cars bound for Los Angeles, Riverside, Irvine, San Diego and Fresno drop to Denver and follow I-70 across Colorado and Utah to I-15, which takes them past Las Vegas and Barstow, while Sacramento, San Francisco and San Jose cars keep to I-80 by way of Cheyenne, Salt Lake City and Reno.

What Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Vermont to California?

Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.

The California address moves the mileage more than most shippers expect. Measured from Burlington, Riverside is the closest of the eight cities we mapped at about 2,930 road miles, Irvine and Los Angeles both come in near 2,970, Sacramento lands near 3,000 and San Diego near 3,030, and San Francisco, Fresno and San Jose sit between roughly 3,080 and 3,120. For delivery towns beyond these eight, see our California car shipping page.

The Vermont starting point matters less, but it still counts. Against Burlington on the way to Los Angeles, a Bennington pickup saves about 115 miles, Rutland and Brattleboro save 70 to 80, Montpelier and St. Johnsbury add roughly 10 to 30, and St. Albans and Newport add 50 to 70. Our Vermont car shipping page lists more pickup areas.

The vehicle and the season do the rest. A full-size SUV or pickup needs a larger slot, and snow on I-80 in Wyoming or on I-70 in the Colorado Rockies can slow the western half of the trip. For a wider look at long-haul pricing, read our guide to cross-country car shipping costs, or put your own towns into the car shipping calculator for an instant estimate.

For a running sedan riding an open carrier from Burlington to Los Angeles, most quotes settle between $1,350 and $1,900. Where your two towns fall inside that span depends mostly on the miles between them, and the longest pair we routed runs about 365 road miles past the shortest.

Plan on $150 to $250 more for a full-size SUV, pickup or minivan, since it takes a bigger slot on the trailer. For an enclosed trailer, expect the open figure plus roughly 40 to 60 percent.

On this lane, the biggest swings come from three things:

  • Delivery city. Riverside and Los Angeles sit closest to Vermont, while San Francisco, Fresno and San Jose sit farthest away.
  • Pickup town. Pickups in southern Vermont run shorter than Burlington, and pickups near the Canadian border run longer.
  • Season. A Vermont winter storm can push back a pickup, and snow on I-80 in Wyoming or on I-70 in Colorado can slow the trip west.

A quote well under the rest deserves a question about what it does not include.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?

Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.

Should You Ship or Drive Your Car From Vermont to California?

Reasons to Ship

Shipping fits a Vermont household starting a new job in the Bay Area, Sacramento or Southern California, a buyer in California who found the right car with a Vermont seller, and a family moving two cars when only one person wants to make the drive. Nobody has to give most of a week to the road while the car rides a carrier.

It also spares the car close to 3,000 miles of interstate and avoids the gas, tire wear and hotel stays the drive would add. Heading south for the winter instead? See our Vermont to Florida car shipping route.

Reasons to Drive

When two people can trade shifts at the wheel and nobody has a set arrival day, driving may cost less, and Rivalane will tell you if it does. Our routing has Burlington to Los Angeles at roughly 54 hours of driving time, close to a week on the road once you count fuel, meals and hotel nights.

Someone driving alone toward a fixed start date usually does better by shipping, since even the shortest pair we mapped, Bennington to Riverside, is close to 2,820 miles. Planning the trip back east one day? Our California to Vermont car shipping route covers the return.

How Long Does Car Shipping From Vermont to California Take?

Most cars reach California 7 to 9 days after loading. Bennington to Riverside, the shortest pair on our map at about 2,820 miles, usually finishes early in that span, and Newport to San Jose, the longest at close to 3,180, generally takes most of it.

Rivalane normally has a carrier in place one to three working days from the time you book, and some give in your pickup dates brings more westbound trucks into play.

The halfway mark falls just west of Lincoln, Nebraska. In winter, snow on I-80 across Wyoming or on I-70 in the Colorado mountains can add a day or two, and a storm in Vermont can hold up a pickup.

When Should You Book a Car Shipment From Vermont to California?

Plan on booking two to three weeks before pickup. With that much notice, Rivalane can match the car to a licensed carrier whose trailer still has room on a westbound run it has already planned, rather than going with whichever truck answers first.

Tell us up front if your pickup date cannot move, because a fixed day cuts down the trucks that fit. From December through March, build in a little slack for snow in Vermont and in the mountains farther west.

Open or Enclosed Car Transport From Vermont to California?

On this route, open transport carries most cars, on the familiar two-level hauler. Across roughly 3,000 miles the car gets what a long drive would give it: road salt and slush if it leaves Vermont in winter, then dust and hard sun in the West.

Choose enclosed transport and the car spends the whole trip inside a hard-sided trailer, away from weather and road grit. Those trailers carry fewer vehicles, so the price is higher, and a last-minute request may take longer to place.

Enclosed is the common pick for collector cars, exotics and new paint, and open for everyday cars.

Enclosed Car Transport

Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.

Open Car Transport

Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.

Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.

Registering a Vermont Car in California After It Arrives

California sets the clock and Vermont handles the wrap-up, so it helps to know both sets of rules before the truck pulls up.

The California deadline. Once you become a resident, or once the car crosses into California, the state allows 20 days to switch an out-of-state registration over. Intending to stay at least half of each year makes you a resident in California terms, and a job in the state, a California voter registration or a California driver license all count as signs of residency.

Papers for the DMV. Bring a REG 31 vehicle verification, completed by a vehicle verifier licensed in California, DMV staff or a law enforcement officer, along with form REG 343 carrying the signature of each registered owner and the most recent title and registration issued for the car. Registration, transfer and use tax fees are due too, and the DMV works out the exact amount when you apply. If the Vermont title stays behind, the registration comes back marked Nontransferable and California does not issue a title.

Smog and newer cars. Gasoline vehicles from model year 1976 on, and diesels from 1998 on with a gross vehicle weight rating under 14,001 pounds, need a smog certification, while motorcycles are exempt. A further rule covers nearly new cars: California law does not allow a vehicle less than 2 years old that had fewer than 7,500 miles when acquired to be brought in or registered, unless it was originally built to California emission rules or qualifies under one of the listed exemptions.

The Vermont plates and registration. The California DMV collects out-of-state plates when it registers the car, with exceptions such as plates that have expired or that the issuing state wants back. To cancel the Vermont registration, send the Vermont DMV form VD-170 with the registration certificate or the plates. A refund applies only in set cases, such as canceling a two-year or five-year registration before its second year begins, a $5 administrative fee may apply, and Vermont asks you to allow 30 business days for processing. For a step by step walkthrough of the DMV visit, see our California registration guide for cars from other states.

What to Expect at Pickup in Vermont and Delivery in California

Settle on a meeting spot at each end before a carrier is booked. A loaded car hauler is long and heavy, and it needs room to stop, drop its ramps and get back on the road.

In Vermont, wide streets in Burlington, South Burlington and the bigger towns along I-89 and I-91 can often take the truck. Dirt roads, steep driveways and tight village centers usually cannot, so many rural pickups happen at a store parking lot or another large lot near the highway.

California works the same way. Hilly streets in San Francisco and around Los Angeles, packed beach neighborhoods and gated communities often send the delivery to a nearby lot, while broad streets in the Inland Empire, Sacramento and the Central Valley more often have space.

Do a walkaround of the car with the driver before you sign anything at pickup, and confirm that each scratch and dent is listed on the condition report. At delivery, that same report is the reference point, so take your own dated photos of each side as well.
