Open transport for a running sedan from Maryland to California is usually priced at $1,150 to $1,650. Depending on the towns, the trip covers about 2,491 to 2,953 road miles, on I-40 to Southern California or I-80 to the Bay Area, and typical delivery is 6 to 9 days from pickup. Two to three weeks of notice helps.

Which Way Does a Maryland Car Travel to California?

Maryland to California car shipping covers about 2,491 to 2,953 road miles over the 64 Maryland and California town pairs in our routing, and the California address shapes the road more than anything else. Every Sacramento, San Francisco and San Jose load stays on I-80 from South Bend, Indiana, to Reno, Nevada, passing Joliet, Des Moines, Omaha, Cheyenne and Salt Lake City along the way. Los Angeles, Riverside, Irvine and Fresno loads split by where the car starts. From Baltimore, Frederick, Hagerstown, Rockville and Cumberland, carriers head west on I-70 through Wheeling, Columbus, Indianapolis and St. Louis, angle down I-44 past Tulsa and pick up I-40 for Amarillo, Albuquerque and Flagstaff. Pickups in Annapolis, Waldorf and Salisbury on the Eastern Shore pick up I-81 instead and follow it south past Roanoke, then run I-40 through Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis and Little Rock, meeting the same line at Oklahoma City. San Diego is the exception: from six of the eight Maryland towns we checked, it leaves I-40 at Little Rock and drops through Texas on I-20 before I-10 carries it west.

What Does It Cost to Ship a Car From Maryland to California?

Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.

Within California, the spread between delivery cities is close to 220 miles. Measured from Baltimore, Riverside is the closest of our eight delivery cities, about 2,630 road miles away, Los Angeles and Irvine come in near 2,665, San Diego and Sacramento sit around 2,725 to 2,735, Fresno is about 2,790, and San Francisco and San Jose run roughly 2,820 to 2,850. The California car shipping page covers other delivery areas.

The Maryland end shifts the total by smaller amounts. Compared with a Baltimore pickup bound for Los Angeles, Cumberland saves about 140 miles, Hagerstown about 70, Frederick about 50 and Rockville about 25, while Waldorf and Annapolis add 30 to 40 and Salisbury adds about 125. Other pickup towns are listed on the Maryland car shipping page.

Beyond the miles, price follows the size of the vehicle, the trailer type and the time of year, since the season changes how many westbound trucks still have an open slot.

Going by recent quotes, open carrier service for a running sedan from Baltimore to Los Angeles comes in somewhere between $1,150 and $1,650. For your own pickup and delivery towns, run the numbers in the car shipping calculator.

A big vehicle, such as a pickup, a minivan or a full-size SUV, uses more deck space and usually costs $100 to $200 extra. With enclosed transport, the quote climbs by about 40 to 60 percent compared with open.

Your quote moves within that range with three things:

  • California delivery city. Riverside and Los Angeles are the shortest deliveries, while San Francisco and San Jose add roughly 150 to 220 miles.
  • Maryland pickup town. Cumberland and Hagerstown start farther west, and a Salisbury pickup on the Eastern Shore starts farther east.
  • Season and weather. Winter storms on the I-80 stretch through Wyoming and over the Sierra Nevada can delay Bay Area loads, and a quieter month gives dispatch more trucks to choose from.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?

Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.

Is It Better to Ship or Drive a Car From Maryland to California?

Reasons to Ship

Shipping fits when a California start date leaves no week for the road, when a household is moving two cars with only one driver, or when no one wants to deal with western mountain passes in winter.

It also spares the car about 2,700 miles of wear and saves a week of fuel, food and hotel bills.

Reasons to Drive

With two drivers, a loose arrival date and an appetite for the open road, driving can come out cheaper, and that deserves a straight answer. Our routing has about 47 hours of actual driving between Baltimore and Los Angeles, which in practice stretches to six or seven days after sleep and meals.

For one driver it is a long haul even from the western panhandle, since Cumberland to Riverside still measures about 2,490 miles. Both are weighed side by side in our breakdown of cross-country car shipping costs.

How Long Does Car Shipping From Maryland to California Take?

Once the car is loaded, most Maryland pickups reach California within 6 to 9 days. Cumberland to Riverside, our shortest measured pair at about 2,490 miles, tends to land at the quick end, while Salisbury to San Jose, the longest at about 2,950, can use the whole window.

Carrier assignment comes first and normally wraps up within one to three working days. A flexible pickup window gives dispatch more westbound trucks to work with.

Our routing puts the Baltimore to Los Angeles drive at about 47 hours, with the halfway point near Oklahoma City. Snow on I-80 in Wyoming or over the Sierra can slow Bay Area and Sacramento loads in winter, and storms sometimes reach the high desert along I-40 in New Mexico and Arizona as well.

When Should You Book Car Shipping From Maryland to California?

Two to three weeks of notice is a good fit for this lane. With that much time, Rivalane can place the car on a licensed carrier that already has a western trip planned and room on the trailer, instead of settling for any truck that happens to be free.

For a pickup between December and March, especially one bound for the Bay Area or Sacramento, leave a few spare days for winter weather on the northern route.

Should a Maryland to California Car Go Open or Enclosed?

Open transport is the usual choice here, with the car riding a standard two-level carrier. Over roughly 2,700 miles the car sees what a driven car would see, from road grime in the Midwest to desert dust in the Southwest.

Enclosed transport keeps the car inside a covered, hard-sided trailer for the whole trip, shielded from weather, dust and road debris. Those trailers hold fewer cars, so each slot costs more and short-notice dates are harder to fill.

Classic cars, exotics and cars with fresh paint usually go enclosed, while everyday cars generally ride open.

Enclosed Car Transport

Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.

Open Car Transport

Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.

Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.

Common Slip-Ups When Registering a Maryland Car in California

A car brought into California by a new resident has to be registered with the California DMV within 20 days. That count begins once you become a California resident or once the car is brought in. The DMV treats you as a resident once you intend to stay six months or more in a year, with a job, voter registration or a home in California among the signs. These are the mistakes that most often slow a Maryland car down.

  • Waiting until every document is in hand. The DMV advises filing the application and paying the fees on time even if the title or smog certificate is still missing, to avoid penalties.
  • Arriving without the paperwork the DMV asks for. Bring the Application for Title or Registration, REG 343, which all registered owners must sign, along with the most recent Maryland title and registration. If the Maryland title is not surrendered, the DMV will not issue a California title and the registration card is stamped Nontransferable.
  • Forgetting the vehicle verification. The REG 31 verification is completed by an authorized DMV employee, a California licensed vehicle verifier or a law enforcement officer.
  • Assuming the car is exempt from smog. Gasoline vehicles from model year 1976 on need a California smog certificate, and so do diesel vehicles of model year 1998 or newer that weigh less than 14,001 pounds. Motorcycles are exempt.
  • Overlooking the rule on newer cars. A vehicle purchased at less than 2 years of age with under 7,500 miles on it is generally barred from California registration unless it was made to California emission standards or an exemption covers it.
  • Handing the Maryland plates to the wrong office. California keeps out-of-state plates at registration unless they are expired, the car is registered in more than one state, or the issuing state wants them back, and Maryland does: the MVA wants its plates back once you leave Maryland.
  • Canceling Maryland insurance too soon. Keep the policy active until the MVA tag return receipt arrives, because every vehicle registered in Maryland must stay insured.

Registration, transfer and use tax fees apply. Our California registration guide for out-of-state cars covers the steps in order, and the DMV sets out the full process on its New California Resident Portal.

What to Expect at Pickup in Maryland and Delivery in California

Pick the pickup and delivery spots early, while the order is still being placed. A full car carrier is long and heavy, so the driver looks for a broad, flat street or lot with space to park, drop the loading ramps and leave again without stopping traffic.

In Maryland, roomy suburban streets in places like Frederick, Columbia and Bowie rarely cause trouble. Tight rowhouse streets in Baltimore, historic downtown Annapolis and the townhouse courts of Montgomery County often move the pickup to a store parking lot or a broader road close by.

In California, steep streets in parts of Los Angeles and San Francisco, gated neighborhoods in Orange County and the narrow streets of new subdivisions near Sacramento can mean the meeting happens at a bigger lot a few minutes away.

Before the car goes on the truck, inspect it alongside the driver, making sure each chip, scratch and dent already there is written on the condition report, and sign once you both agree on it. Once the car is unloaded in California, compare it with that report before signing for delivery.

Key Things to Know Before Shipping a Car From Maryland to California

Rivalane handles Maryland to California orders from its Melville, New York office, assigning the car to a licensed carrier already heading west and keeping real-time tracking open until delivery. Plan the paperwork alongside the move: California expects a car brought in by a new resident to be registered within 20 days, and the Maryland MVA expects its plates back once you leave the state.
