Moving a running sedan from Manchester to Los Angeles on an open carrier costs about $1,300 to $1,800. Which Roads Take a Car From New Hampshire to California?

New Hampshire to California car shipping runs about 2,878 to 3,195 road miles, a span built from 64 pickup and delivery town pairs and cross-checked against a second mileage source. Where the car starts in New Hampshire decides how it leaves New England. Loads from Manchester, Nashua and Portsmouth head southwest past Worcester, follow I-84 through Hartford and join I-80 in Pennsylvania. Loads from Concord, Keene, Laconia, Lebanon and Berlin cross New York on I-90 by Syracuse and Buffalo, then follow Lake Erie past Cleveland. Nearly every load ends up on I-80 through Des Moines, Omaha and Lincoln, and from there the delivery city sets the course. Cars bound for Los Angeles, Riverside, Irvine and Fresno branch off toward Denver, ride I-70 over Colorado and Utah and come down I-15 through Las Vegas and Barstow. San Jose, San Francisco and Sacramento cars stay on I-80 to the end, through Cheyenne, Salt Lake City and Reno. Loads for San Diego from the I-90 group take that same Las Vegas road, while those from Manchester, Nashua and Portsmouth swing south on I-40 by St. Louis, Albuquerque and Flagstaff.

How Much Does New Hampshire to California Car Shipping Cost?

Your quote depends on your vehicle, the exact pickup and delivery addresses, the season and the trailer type, so run the calculator for a figure on your dates.

From Manchester, which California city receives the car changes the mileage much more than which New Hampshire town it leaves from. Of the eight cities we mapped, Riverside is the closest, at about 2,990 road miles, with Irvine and Los Angeles both near 3,020. Sacramento and San Diego land close together around 3,055, San Francisco near 3,140 and Fresno near 3,150, while San Jose is the longest haul at about 3,170. The California car shipping page lists more delivery cities.

Inside New Hampshire the gap is smaller. To Los Angeles, Keene is the shortest pickup at about 2,915 miles and Lebanon about 2,940, since the western towns start closer to New York, while Portsmouth and Berlin are the longest at about 3,045 and 3,050. Manchester sits near 3,025. More pickup towns are on the New Hampshire car shipping page.

Four gears holding a car, a calendar, a map pin and a car carrier, the factors behind the cost of shipping a car from New Hampshire to California

Right now, quotes for a running sedan on the open deck of a carrier from Manchester to Los Angeles fall between $1,300 and $1,800. To price your own towns, use the car shipping calculator.

Larger vehicles cost more to move: a full-size SUV, pickup or minivan takes a bigger space on the deck and typically adds about $150 to $250, while choosing enclosed service raises the bill by roughly 40 to 60 percent over open.

Three factors shape the number on this route:

  • The delivery city. From Manchester, San Jose runs about 180 miles longer than Riverside, the nearest California city we mapped.
  • The pickup town. Keene and Lebanon cars cover the fewest miles to Los Angeles, and Portsmouth and Berlin cars the most, up to about 135 more.
  • The month. Snow in New Hampshire, on I-80 in Wyoming and on I-70 in the Colorado mountains, plus chain controls on California mountain grades, can delay a truck by a day or more in winter.

What Factors Actually
Influence Pricing on This Route?

Five things move the price on any lane: the vehicle's size, whether it runs, how easy each end is to reach, the season and the trailer type. Booking early protects your timeline, keeps pricing steady and reduces the risk of last-minute carrier changes.

Size decides how much deck space your vehicle takes and how many other cars fit alongside it. A standard sedan is the cheapest thing to move because it slots almost anywhere on the trailer. SUVs, pickups and vans take more room and usually cost more on the same lane.

Should You Ship Your Car to California or Drive It From New Hampshire?

Reasons to Ship

Shipping makes sense when the drive would eat a week or more that the move cannot spare: a job in San Diego, Los Angeles or the Bay Area that starts on a set date, a New Hampshire house sale that closes the same month a California lease begins, or a household that owns two cars but only has time to drive one.

It also keeps about 3,000 miles of wear, fuel and motel bills off the budget. Heading somewhere warm for the winter instead? New Hampshire to Florida car shipping covers that run.

Reasons to Drive

Driving can cost less for two people who share the wheel, have open dates and want the trip itself, and Rivalane will say so when driving is the better deal for you. Our routing puts Manchester to Los Angeles at about 54 hours of driving time, which becomes six or seven days on the road once fuel, food and sleep are added.

Alone, the trip is a long haul even on the shortest pair we mapped, Keene to Riverside, at about 2,880 miles. The cross-country car shipping cost guide lays the two options side by side. For a shorter run out of the state, see New Hampshire to Texas car shipping.

How Many Days Does Shipping a Car From New Hampshire to California Take?

Once the car is loaded, most deliveries to California typically land 7 to 9 days later. Keene to Riverside, about 2,880 road miles and the shortest of our 64 pairs, usually arrives near the start of that window, while Berlin to San Jose, at roughly 3,195 the longest, can run to the end of it.

Expect the carrier to be confirmed within one to three working days. A pickup date with a little give in it lets more westbound trucks take the car.

On the core Manchester to Los Angeles run the halfway point falls in eastern Nebraska, just outside Lincoln. From December through March, snow on northern New England roads, in Wyoming and in the Colorado high country can add a day or two.

How Far Ahead Should You Book a New Hampshire to California Shipment?

Two or three weeks of lead time before pickup usually works best. That much notice lets Rivalane line up a licensed carrier that has room on a trailer already heading west, instead of whichever truck is free first. If the date is fixed, mention it when you book, because a firm date narrows the carriers that can take the car.

Give the schedule more room from December to March, when snow on either end of the trip or in the Rockies can slow trucks. Shipping a second car from just across the Connecticut River? Vermont to California car shipping covers that run.

Open or Enclosed Carrier From New Hampshire to California: Which Should You Pick?

Most cars on this run go by open transport, on the upper or lower deck of a regular car carrier. Over a trip of about 3,000 miles, the car sees what any long drive would: winter road salt in New England, rain and grit on the Plains, then dry heat and dust on the desert miles into California.

On an enclosed trailer the car travels behind solid walls from pickup to delivery. Those trailers carry fewer cars, which raises the cost of each spot and can make a short-notice booking slower to place. Classic and collector cars, high-value models and freshly painted cars tend to go enclosed, while everyday cars go open.

Enclosed Car Transport

Enclosed demand rises for high-value, specialty and seasonal vehicles, and enclosed trailers protect against road debris and weather, which matters most on longer hauls. Enclosed rigs are a small fraction of the trailers working any given lane, and that scarcity is what drives both the higher price and the longer booking lead time.

Open Car Transport

Most vehicles move on open trailers, and for most routes that is the more cost-effective way to ship a car.

Open transport works well for standard vehicles and keeps costs predictable. It also offers the widest carrier availability.

Which California Registration Rules Apply to a New Hampshire Car?

California gives you 20 days to register the car, starting when you become a resident or when the car comes into the state. In the DMV view, residency begins with a plan to stay in California six months or more out of a year, and the DMV also looks at signs such as a job in the state, voter registration, a rented primary residence or a California driver license. Which of the rules below touch your car depends on its age, its fuel and who holds the title. For the full visit, see the step-by-step California registration guide.

For every car. Bring a REG 343 application with the signature of each registered owner, the most recent out-of-state title and registration card for the car, and form REG 31, a vehicle verification that only three kinds of inspector can complete: DMV staff authorized to do it, law enforcement officers and vehicle verifiers licensed in California. Registration, transfer and use tax fees follow.

If a lender holds the title. Without the title in hand, California still registers the car but marks the registration card Nontransferable and does not issue a California title.

If it runs on gasoline or diesel. Gasoline cars from 1976 on need a smog certification. Diesels need one too from 1998 on if their gross rating is under 14,001 pounds. Motorcycles are exempt.

If it is nearly new. A car less than 2 years old that shows under 7,500 miles cannot be brought in or registered by a California resident unless it met California emission standards when built or an exemption applies.

If your New Hampshire plates are still current. The New Hampshire DMV says a driver who has moved to another state is not required to surrender the plates. California asks for out-of-state plates at registration and lets you keep them only when they have expired, the issuing state wants them back, or the car is registered in both states, so plan on leaving current New Hampshire plates with the DMV.

If something is still missing. File the application and fees on time even without the title or smog certificate, which the DMV says avoids penalties.

What Happens at Pickup in New Hampshire and Delivery in California?

Pick both handover points early, before the carrier is assigned. A loaded hauler needs a wide, straight piece of road where it can stop, put down its ramps and get back into traffic, and many streets cannot offer that.

In New Hampshire, the narrow lanes of older downtowns such as Portsmouth and Concord, dirt and gravel roads, and long rural driveways in the Lakes Region and the North Country often see the pickup shifted to a store or commuter lot near a main road. Wide streets in many newer subdivisions around Manchester and Nashua can often take the truck right at the curb.

In California, gated communities and homeowner association rules can keep a big truck out, and tight hillside streets in Los Angeles, San Diego and the Bay Area rarely work, so a nearby shopping center lot is a common meeting point. Newer tracts around Riverside and Fresno tend to offer more curb space.

At pickup, you and the driver inspect the car side by side and record any existing chips, scratches or dents on the inspection report before it goes on the trailer. Repeat that inspection at delivery and only sign once it matches.
